Abstract Jane Eyre has attracted generations of readers from all over the world. The novel depicts Jane Eyre, an orphan, who kept seeking after freedom, equality and dignity in spite of endless pains. Finally she married Rochester and harvested her own happiness. After its publication, many scholars have done research and offered insights into the growth of Jane Eyre, the structure of the novel and so on. However, there is relatively little research focusing on the archetypal analysis of the novel.71710
In this thesis, the theory of archetypal criticism is used to analyze the Biblical archetypes of death and rebirth in the novel Jane Eyre. By comparing the characters and plots in the Bible and the novel, this paper elaborates on the following views: the archetype of Thornfield is the paradise lost; Jane Eyre's archetype is Eve; the archetype of Mason siblings is Satan the snake; the redemption of the hero and heroine is the embodiment of the salvation process of Jesus; the Ferndean Manor where Jane Eyre and Rochester have lived happily can be compared to the paradise regained in the Bible.

Chapter One Introduction
Charlotte Bronte wrote her novel Jane Eyre in 1847. After 160 years, Jane Eyre is still one of the most popular novels in the history of English literature. This paper is an analysis of the death and rebirth archetypes in the novel and intends to make the readers understand more about the enduring charm of the work.
For many years, a lot of professors or scholars have discussed Jane Eyre at home and abroad. Most of them comment on its feminism. Jane Eyre was seen as the model who pursues equality and dignity and has courage to fight. Famous American feminist critics Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar have discussed the mutual mapping between Bertha and Jane Eyre from feminist and psychological perspectives in a book called Crazy Woman. They believed that the characteristics of Jane Eyre can be highlighted because of the presence of Bertha. At the same time, Elaine Showalter also echoed the view that Bertha is another ego of Jane Eyre from the perspective of spiritual analysis.
