A Study of the Chinese Element “Ghost” in The Woman Warrior,

Abstract Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior, known as a masterpiece in the Chinese American literature, makes good use of vivid description and imagination to show a Chinese American’s girlhood life and reveal the sufferings of oppression and racism afflicted upon the female characters。 This article analyzes the three deep meanings of the Chinese element, “ghost” herein: an illustration of discontent and rejection from the first-generation immigrants; the seconde-generation Chinese Americans’ acception of America being regarded as “ghost” in the eyes of the first-generation immigrants; the negative elements of traditional Chinese culture, especially gender prejudice。 The employment of the element “ghost” reflected the author’s criticism to racism and sexism and her wish that the females fight against oppression and bravely pursue love and freedom。75094

1。 Introduction

Born in Stockton’s Chinatown, Maxine Hong Kingston is the second generation of Chinese American whose parents emigrated from rural areas of Guangdong Province。 She is one of the most significant Chinese American writers who made great contribution to the world literature with her works as The Woman Warrior, The Fifth Book of Peace, China Men and so on。 Among these works, The Woman Warrior won immediate success upon its publication in 1976 and brought great reputation to Kingston and established her status as a Chinese-American writer with profound effect upon American literature。

The Woman Warrior contains five short stories: “No Name Woman”, “White Tigers”, “Shaman”, “At the Western Palace”, “A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe”, and each of which centered around Kingston herself。 In these stories the author constantly portrays around this central character with Chinese elements。 While ghost, dragon and Kung Fu are commonly held as the Chinese elements, in The Woman Warrior, the author bears the “ghost” in explanation of the theme of these stories: the Chinese-American women can fight against and rise above the inferior position restrained by the traditional Chinese culture as well as finding themselves a way to integrate into the two different cultures and letting their voices be heard。 This paper holds that the “ghost” can be classified into three aspects: “ghost” as rejection of America and its culture, “ghost” as acception by the second generation of Chinese Americans and “ghost” as fighting against the gender prejudice。
