Abstract William Faulkner, a southerner from the Mississippi who produced many novels in all his life closely linked with the Deep South, is usually regarded as one of the most important American novelists of the 20th century。 A Rose for Emily is one of his well-known works among his short stories which vividly depicts the typical female image called Emily who emits tragic flavor throughout the story and her life ended as a tragedy under the patriarchal society。 However, undoubtedly, the life of Emily is not only a tragedy but also a heroine with a strong rebelling spirits for her own beings。 Thus multi-dimensional analysis of the Emily’s characteristics will be used in depths, from which we can better understand the theme and technique methods used in the story。

An Analysis of the Female Image in A Rose for Emily

William Faulkner, a southerner from the Mississippi who produced many novels in all his life closely linked with the Deep South, is usually regarded as one of the most important American novelists of the 20th century today, knowing for his epic portrayal of the tragic conflict between the old and the new South。 Faulkner’s legacy to American literature lies in his invention of the host character typical of the historical growth and subsequent decadence of the South; his construction of the imaginary Yoknapatawpha County and its inhabitants, and his creation of a saga of the Sartoris。 William Faulkner was born in Mississippi river, his family trace to the time of the Civil War in the history of the South, all of those are ingenious reflected in his works。 He was awarded the Noble Literature Prize in 1949 and he is interested in multi-generational family chronicles, which gives the Yoknapatawpha County saga sense in continuity that makes the area and its inhabitants seem real。 论文网
A Rose for Emily is one of the well-known short stories which depicts the story of the northern town of Jefferson in Yoknapatawpha and consequently it focuses on some aspects of Faulkner’s ‘mythical kingdom’。 Based on the conflict between the new order after the civil war on the concise writing style and the unique construction of William Faulkner, he shows us a typical female image called Emily。 As for Emily, a noble descent, who has greatly influenced by the traditional cultures and moral values which made her obedient and perseverance character, meanwhile, she has been prevented from getting in touch with anyone except for her manservant, his father thought that she should found a better man who could match her。 After his father died, she falls in love with a man called Homer Barron, unfortunately, Homer Barron doesn’t accept her love。 In order to maintain her loved one she killed him by arsenic and locked his dead body in her room for almost 40 years until it has been found by town people。 Moreover, in this novel, there are a large number of artistic techniques are used here and there for the sake of describing the theme and the typical character more vividly。 《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》中女性形象分析:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_98836.html
