(2) -这件衣服真漂亮,太适合你了。
-这是上次去旅游的时候买的。
In this dialogue, we can find that the hearer’s words cannot offer enough messages for the speaker, which indicates the violated of the quantity, that is to say, the message of responses is not enough as needed。
(3) -小王,你这项工作做得真不错!
-都大家一起努力的结果呀。
In this dialogue, the hearer’s response is not relevant to the speaker’s compliment, which indicates the violation of the relation。
(4) -你今天穿的真漂亮!
-你的衣服才漂亮呢,在哪买的?
This dialogue indicates the violation of the manner。
While Contrary to the Chinese compliments responses, much of the English compliments responses measure up the Cooperative Principle。 In English, people always use “thanks” to answer others compliments, which indicates that the hearer’s attitude to the speaker is active cooperation。 The hearer not only expresses his “thanks” to the speaker, but believes the speaker’s words, which mainly accords with the Quality of the Cooperative Principle。 In a word, the Quality is the most common choice for the English compliment responses。 For example:
(1)-Your dress is beautiful。 论文网
-Thank you!
(2) -I like your new hair-style very much。
-Thank you!
On the other hand, in English, there are also some situations in the violation of CP。 For example:
(1) -Your English is very good。
-Well, my listening is good, but my writing is poor。 ( violation of quantity)
(2) - Your math is good。
- Actually, I wish that is true。 ( violation of manner)
2。2 The Politeness Principle
This principle is mentioned by Leech(1983:132) to make up the disadvantages of the CP,which includes six norms:
a。The tact maxim: minimize the cost to others; maximize the benefit to others。
b。The generosity maxim: minimize the benefit to self; maximize the cost to self。
c。The approbation maxim: minimize dispraise of others; maximize praise of others。
d。The modesty maxim: minimize praise of self; maximize dispraise of self。
e。The agreement maxim: minimize disagreement between self and others; maxim agreement between self and others。
f。The sympathy maxim: minimize antipathy between self and others; maximize sympathy between self and others。
As for as the Politeness Principle id concerned, English and Chinese compliments and their responses also observe the different maxims。
Chinese compliments responses mainly based on the Modesty maxim and the Generosity maxim, which mainly owes to the Chinese traditional culture。 For instance:
(1) -Your English speaking is very well。 (你的英文说的真溜!)
- Not really as you said。 (哪里,哪里。)
(2) -You look quite well。(你最近气色不错!)
-So do you。 (你也是啊!)
In addition, Chinese compliments responses also conform to the Sympathy maxim, which act as when people response to others’ praise, they also show praise to the speaker。 For example:
-你今天晚会上歌唱的太好了!文献综述
-你也不错呀!
While English compliment responses follow the politeness maxim of itself, which act as the Agreement maxim。 The common uses of the word “thanks” is a reflection of the Agreement maxim。 For example:
(1) -The movie is great。 I really like it。
-Thank you, I am glad you like it。
(2) -Your haircut is nice。 英汉称赞语及其应答的对比语用分析(3):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_99131.html
