2。1Introduction to Emily Bronte
Emily Bronte is one of the outstanding novelists and poets in the 19th century English literature。 She was born on 30th July, 1818, in a remote Thornton in Yorkshire of North Britain, but moved to the town of Haworth in western Yorkshire, together with her parents, elder sisters, elder brother and younger sister in 1820。 Since their house was settled on the highest part of the town, there was a wonderful view of the cemetery and church where it was the social and religious center of people living there, as well as the working place for Patrick Bronte, the priest-in-charge。 Behind the dwelling, there were endless moors, giggling creeks and green valley。 There is no doubt that It was a great place for Bront's creation, It's there she got the sensitive and her minds began flying。
Emily's character influenced her literary works greatly。 She was quiet and introversive。 Being different from her sister Charlotte, she was implicit and inaccessible and even had no friends。 She seldom communicated with others in letters and preferred mysticism。 It seems that the giants have a same property is that they are scanty of words。 When she worked as a governess at Miss Patchett's Ladies Academy at Law Hill School ,near Halifax, she was too homesick to leave soon。 When she attended a private school in Brussels run by Constantian Heger and his wife, she nearly spoke to no one。 In addition, she declined all acquaintance except her family (Ralli, 1925:497)。来:自[优E尔L论W文W网www.youerw.com +QQ752018766-
2。2Plots of Wuthering Heights
In the novel, everyone had a hardship of love。 The most important love is the one between Heathcliff and Catherine。 Heathcliff loves Catherine and Catherine loves him too。 Their love is pure and passionate。 As they both do not fully understand the nature of their love, they betray one another: each of them married a person who they know they do not love at all, though they love each other in the deep heart even they cannot really realize by themselves。 Mistake is made and it is hard to change。 Death is the only way to their union。 In Wuthering Heights, it is this powerful love tragedy that constitutes the core of the novel。 Besides the love between Heathcliff and Catherine, Emily also describes love in other characters。 Edgar loved Catherine and married her, but never really got love in return from her。 Hindley loved his wife Frances, but she died at a young age。 Isabella loved Heathcliff, and they were married, but she discovered that her husband was not the caring man she thought before。 Cathy loved Linton, but then discovered he was nothing but a sickly, spoiled brat。 Linton loved Cathy but felt he was too weak to do anything。 And Hareton loved Cathy, but at the beginning, he was too uneducated to be worthy of her love。 Everyone in the book loved someone, and was hurt by that love。 No one gets the love that she wants。 All love is tragedy。
