First of all, the happy side:
(1) Students have a positive attitude and are interested in oral English and they also think spoken English is of great importance。
Attitudes and interests are the foundation of learning。 According to the questions 2, 3 and 5 in the appendix 1, 27% of the students are very likely to communicate in English, 49% of the students like to communicate in English, less than 10% of the students don't like to communicate in English。 What’s more, the results of question 4 and 7 reflect that 40% think significantly help to improve your English speaking ability, 19% of students think that help is very obvious; 49% of the students think in listening, speaking, reading and writing in all four skills, speaking is the most important。 From these data we can see that the majority of students think oral English is very important, for learning English is a very important skill。
(2) Students have various kinds of ways to practice oral English。
71% of the students spend more than 30 minutes reading English materials after class。 18% of the students can compare with the foreigner fluently in English conversation。 This shows that the level of the students has reached a higher level, family and school is more pay attention to the development of oral English。
Second, the down side:
(1) Different levels of students。
The data of question 8 shows that 41% of the students question the need to speak English in class。 60% of the students are fearful to speak English, afraid of making mistakes which other classmates might make fun of。 25% of the students can't communicate in English with teachers and classmates, they don't understand the meaning。 It shows part of the students foundation are bad, they have to struggle to keep up with the class overall pace。 The class is polarized。 There are also many
factors, one of them is teacher's guidance also has shortcomings。
(2) The atmosphere of English oral practice is short。
86。9% of the students never communicate with others after class。 21。4% of the students in extra-curricular never read some English materials, 86。7% of the students never watch English teaching or related video after class。
(3) Outdated way of teaching, lack of school extracurricular activities。
According to the question 10, with 49% of students think the teacher uses a teaching method that teacher speaks and students listen which leads to the less chance to communicate with each other between students in the classroom。 64% of the students reflect the school never have the English corner, English competition, English radio, and other similar activities。 68% of the students show the class rarely holds English activities。 This shows that students opportunities to speak English is
very few。 If you want to practice oral English in a country whose native tongue is not English, you must have an environment but school gives no such environment。 As a result, the opportunities for students to use English properly also very poor。
