A Study of Subtitle Translation of Da Vinci's Demons from the Perspective of Functionalism

I。 Introduction

Translation, the "bridge and link", connects different cultures and different civilizations, and it plays a crucial role during the progress of China and West development。 Since the Reform and Opening-up in 1978, Chinese economy has developed rapidly。 In these changes, translation contributes a great share。 Now, translation has become a specialized industry, and the market expands with the global economy。  论文网

The mass media, as the part and parcel of our daily life, not only entertains the audience, but also transmits the different cultures and messages to allow the audience to learn about the world。 The introduced TV plays meet the demands of common people。 And the introduction of the foreign TV plays brings us into a new field of translation--the subtitle translation。 

With the increasing cultural communication between China and the West, more and more foreign movies and TV shows are introduced into China。 Among them, the American TV series are the most popular ones。 But because of the barrier of language and culture, not every Chinese can understand the meaning of the English subtitle or not understand what the actors said。 They can only understand through dubbing。 To make it easier for Chinese people to understand the foreign plays and let them learn about the foreign culture through these foreign plays, we often add the subtitle translation to the foreign movies besides dubbing them。 

  Nowadays, young people are more inclined to watch the subtitled plays than the dubbed series。 Subtitle translation is the newborn in the 

field of translation, and its importance becomes more and more evident。 An increasing number of specialists and scholars are putting their efforts into the research of subtitle translation, and they have made great achievement about it。

The theoretical research about the subtitle translation in China is relatively slow。 Most foreign plays are translated for free by the people who love to do it, and in the process, they translate these plays according to their English proficiency。 This might result in translations in poor quality。 For improvement of translation, researchers in China should keep up with the trend of the times and start to study the subtitle translation。 Besides, to enhance their own ability, they need to pick up experience through the foreign correlation theory。

This paper is pided into four parts。 In Part One, the paper introduces the research background and the thesis structure。 Part Two describes the Features of subtitle translation and its correlation theories, and the paper detailedly introduces the Functionalism, including its generation, development and its social status。 In Part Three, the paper analyses the translation strategies, based on the subtitle translation of Da Vinci's Demons。 Part Four gives a conclusion to this paper。
