摘 要谚语作为一种特殊的语言形式，既有固定的语言形式又有深厚的文化背景。因其优美，简洁，生动，形象等特点，谚语常常被认为是语言的精华并在各个民族人们的日常生活中被广泛使用。作为英语文化的重要组成部分之一，英语谚语富含大量的英语文化特征，带有鲜明的地域民族特色。因而，不同的地理、历史、风俗及宗教背景造成了英语谚语汉译的难点。归化与异化是两个以文化为导向的翻译策略,本文通过探讨这两种翻译策略在英语谚语汉译中的运用，认为归化与异化互相依存，脱离特定的条件来讨论二者优劣是没有意义的，因而应针对具体情况进行分析，对于不同英语谚语的汉译采用不同的翻译策略。21715

Abstract A proverb is a special type of saying, with fixed linguistic form and profound cultural background. Proverbs, due to their beautifulness in sound and form, brevity and vividness, are generally considered the cream of a language and widely used by people of all nations in their daily life. English proverbs, as one of the most significant parts of English culture, are embodied with abundant English cultural features and characterized with special national flavors. Therefore, the different geographic, historic, conventional as well as religious backgrounds of the two languages cause difficulties in English proverb translation. Domestication and foreignization are two culture-oriented translation strategies which are discussed in this paper focusing on the application of the two strategies in English-Chinese proverb translation. Basing on the analysis, this paper gets the conclusion that domestication and foreignization coexist with each other and it is meaningless to discuss which one is better or worse without relating to certain conditions. Thus, English proverbs with different characteristics should be translated by applying different translation strategies on the basis of specific situations.

I. Introduction
Proverbs, as the wisdom of human beings with distinctive, established and accepted multiword expressions in a language, are embodied with abundant cultural features and characterized with special national flavors. English proverbs are considered to be a significant part of western culture and a reflection of its extensive, well-established and deep-rooted history and culture, reflecting the social life, geographical environment, historical background and social conventions of a nation. Due to their conciseness in form and colorfulness in meaning, they are widely used in almost all kinds of communication process, including both speaking and writing, and regarded as a difficult point of a deep comprehension upon language and culture. Therefore, whether proverbs can be translated appropriately is quite significant to the target language readers’ comprehension.
