William Faulkner (1897-1962), is a major figure of contemporary American literature. More than simply a renowned Mississippi writer, the Nobel Prize-winning novelist and story writer, he is acclaimed throughout the world as one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers, one who transformed his “postage stamp” of native soil into apocryphal setting in which he explored, articulated and challenged “the old verities and truths of heart”. Faulkner accomplished in a little over a decade more artistically than most writers accomplish over a lifetime of writing. He wrote 19 long novels and more than 100 short stories in his life. The setting of 15 novels and the majority of the short fiction is the American South. His major works include The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), Light in August (1932), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936). As far as writing techniques are concerned, Faulkner is among the greatest experimentalists of the 20th century novel. His effective use of the stream of consciousness, multiple points of view, symbolism and imagery place him among the rank of the greatest modern writers along with James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. He was famous for his long novel named The Sound and the Fury, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Faulkner received the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel.
