Thomas Harris is an American novelist, screenwriter and playwright。 He is well known for his works of suspense and thrill。 The serial novel of Hannibal is his representative work and has been considered to be one of the masterpieces that profoundly reflect the crimes of the American society in the 20th century。 The protagonist of Harris’ novel, Hannibal Lector, has become a cultural phenomenon, with a lot of people knowing a lot about him。 However, the reading public knows little about his creator。

Thomas Harris is a person whose life remains to be a mystery to the public because he is always trying to keep out of the limelight。 He dislikes giving speeches and has not given an interview since 1976。 Harris was born in Tennessee in 1940, but his family moved to Mississippi when he was very young。 The Harris family suffered financially。 During his childhood, he was considered as a quiet boy because he did not prefer to interact with others。 He entered Baylor University in Texas where he obtained a degree in English。 When he was a child, he often told his mother that he would be a writer when he grew up (Oakley, 2013)。 During his college period, He sent horrifying stories to some magazines; the stories involve the depiction of injury, blood and death。 When he graduated in 1964, he started a job working as an editor for the Associated Press in New York City and was a reporter for the local newspaper from 1968 to 1974。 These experiences provided him with valuable insights into the world of crime and he began to pay more attention to the crimes in the American society today。 All this led to the writing of his first novel。 His first novel entitled as Black Sunday was published in 1975。 After that he devoted himself to writing fiction。 His second novel, Red Dragon was completed six years later。 The Silence of the Lambs came out in 1988，and Hannibal in 1999(Wei, 2012)。 All of these books was once bestsellers and have been adapted to movies, and The Silence of the Lambs won the most remarkable Academy Award。 Therefore, Thomas Harris enjoys a high reputation as a thriller novelist and screenwriter as he creates the most well-known character— Hannibal Lecter in a series of suspense novels。 Hannibal Rising is the latest work of Harris’ Hannibal series。 Through this work, the reading public can get a clue of the reason why Hannibal Lecter becomes such a notorious cannibal and killer。

Opening in Lithuania during 1941, Hannibal Lecter is eight years old and lives in a castle with his parents and sister, Mischa。 Because of World War II, the Lecter family escapes to their lodge to elude the advancing German troops。 Three years later, an advancing Soviet tank stops at the Lecter family's lodge looking for water, only to be bombed by a German Stuka。 The explosion kills all Lecter family but the two children。 Surviving in the lodge, Hannibal and Mischa are captured when five deserters appear: Grutas, Milko, Grentz, Dortlich, and Kolnas。 They lock the Lecters in the barn。 Running low on supplies, the deserters want to take Mischa。 Realizing they intend to cannibalize her, Hannibal tries to stop them, only to have his arm broken before he blacks out。 He is saved by a group of Soviet soldiers。 论文网
