Chapter 1 Introduction

1。1 Setting

Literally, comparative literature is the study of comparing different literatures to dig out the quintessence of each literature in terms of their intersection, difference and commonalities。 On the basis of different aims of literary comparison, it’s pided into two branches — cross-cultural and interdisciplinary。 Cross-cultural studies often look into the achievement of communication or comparison of literature with the background of different cultures, mostly focusing on the characteristic features of distinct nations, such as the literary comparison of continents, the East and the West, or cities, London and New York。 They always center on the similar field to discuss the connotative or denotative implication of cultures。 Meanwhile interdisciplinary studies contain several fields mostly within the nation to study the essence and characteristics of disciplines themselves。 Inevitably, the factor of cross-cultural studies can be involved in interdisciplinary when they study different literary fields cross the countries。 So these two branches could have overlappings in some way and there are occasions that no specific supports to explain。

This paper discusses the contrast of Chinese poems and Western ballads。 It seems to study from the interdisciplinary cross the nations, namely, poems and ballads from different fields and the features of poems and ballads are actually one aspect to be studied。 However, the key of this paper will be extended to the cultural implications。 Moreover, this contrast develops from the fact that they could both be sung among people and apart from the tunes, their extensive lyrics and forms are both crafted enough to be shared together。 So the followings will discuss from the aspect of cross-cultures。论文网

The linguistic features of poems and ballads will be introduced firstly to help the readers get familiar with the basic knowledge。 Each part will also discuss the contrast of the East and the West to pave the way of the further discussion of contrast of Chinese poems and Western ballads。 Through this contrast, the influence of old literature like Chinese poems and Western ballads in today’s modern literature will be explored as well。 And the significance to the development of their languages will be analyzed in the end。

1。2 Literature Review

1。2。1 Comparative literature

Some researchers have been exploring the reasons of emergence of comparative literature。 Cao (2015) believes that the trend of immigration of 20th century brings about the growing awareness of cultural importance among natives and immigrants。 The crash of different cultures and traditions results in the emergence of comparative literature。 Bermann (2009) holds the view that it is globalization that pushes comparative literature come out because the connection of economy, internet and traffic leads to the necessity of literature connection。 Then the comparison of cultures and disciplines provides a new perspective for scholars。 And she also added that modern comparative literature focuses more on the texts of different cultures。

Speaking of the contents of comparative literature, scholars from different areas held various views。 Some Chinese comparatists proposed that comparative literature should undoubtedly focus more on heterogeneity and heterology centered East-West cultural communication。 And some researchers like Hu (2001) believed that variations from the process of literature spreading could bring the discount of the original work。 However, compared with Chinese methods of contrasting, analyzing and concluding, western comparatists were accustomed to discussing the commonalities between literatures。 Weisstein held the view that sameness made bigger difference than expanding the existence of difference of literatures。 Saussy (2006) believed that the relations of different literatures help people to adapt the multiple situations。 Other scholars emphasize certain literature’s significance and influence in comparative literature。 Wink (2009) studied the importance of Caribbean literature in comparative literature。 文献综述
