Chapter 1 Introduction

1。1 Research Background

Shijing, an anthology at the core of the classical Chinese canon, is the oldest existing collection of Chinese poetry, comprising 311 works dating from the 11th to 7th centuries BC。 It is one of the “Five Classics” traditionally said to have been compiled by Confucius, and has been studied and memorized by scholars in China and other countries over two millennia。

As the first poem in the collection, “Guan Ju” holds a place of special importance。 Seeming to belie its importance is its apparently simple theme。 Fundamentally, “Guan Ju” is a celebration in song of finding a good and fair maiden as a match for a young gentleman。

Wen Yiduo, the famous Chinese poet and scholar, once commented on Shijing as follows, “ It seems that poetry has never posed such significant social functions in any other nations than in our country。 Here, it has been representing our religion, politics, education, society, and even the most comprehensive way of life since it was published。” (Wen Yiduo, 2006) From his remarks, it can be found that Shijing has occupied an extremely important historic position and its influence on Chinese culture can never be undervalued。 As a result, English translation of Shijing becomes an essential part for English natives to study the origin of traditional Chinese culture。 Up until now, more than ten different English versions of Shijing are to be found translated by scholars both at home and abroad。

Among all the well-known translating representatives of Shijing ranging from missionaries, sinologists, literators to Chinese contemporary translators, the author of this thesis chooses to conduct the analysis over the English versions of “Guan Ju” by Ezra Pound—“Hid, Hid” from deconstructionist perspective。 Actually, Pound’s translations suffer great blame from critics and sinologists。 In the academia, there are many essays and books related to Pound’s translations, and the most heated argument focuses on whether his translations should be considered as the faithful translations or not。 Someone thinks that his translations are totally literary works since there are so many deviations in his translations compared to the original texts。 However, someone considers the application of unique translation techniques makes Pound’s translations different from the traditional one。源Q于W优E尔A论S文R网wwW.yOueRw.com 原文+QQ75201,8766
