In the 1920s, American literature developed quickly and many talented writers sprout out。 Fitzgerald was one of the most important representative writers。 He wrote the great work ‘the Great Gatsby’, combing his own experience and specific background。
Gates, a young man of humble origin, was eager to get love of a rich woman named Daisy。 He set this as the highest ideal of life and made unremitting efforts。 However, it was used and betrayed by Daisy in the end。 The author’s narration of Gatsby showed the sorrow and distortion of an era。 After the First World War, the rapid growth of the U。S economy, showing a hitherto unknown prosperity。 But with the implementation of prohibition, a large number of liquor smugglers continue to emerge, carnival culture was also increasingly prosperous, various types of private party prevails, enabled organizations to flourish of selling bootleg liquor。 The bloody and cruel of the First World War made American youth who held peace and freedom and dreamed of saving the world shocked and disappointed。 They went to the other extreme and made up for the hollowed soul with wild and extravagant lives。 The values and traditions of the past had been replaced by money, making the Jazz Age become an era of money and status。 The original American dream was steeped in the venom of money and was inevitably distorted。 Gatsby's dream was so, nothingness and unreality。 So it was inevitable that his American dream would collapse。
In 2012, the Chinese dream was first proposed by president Xi Jinping when visiting ‘The Road of Revival’ exhibition, which aroused heated discussion home and abroad。 This paper will interpret “the Great Gatsby” from three aspects: American dream in the Great Gatsby, analyze the profound social and historical reasons of the disillusionment of American dream and dig the enlightenment which may serve for the realization of the Chinese dream。
