AbstractThe question of translatability and untranslatability is a long-debated issue in translation。 Its history accompanied the development of translation theory and practice。 Translation is a kind of intercultural communication, which builds a bridge between the source language and target language。 But, it's difficult to keep great harmony both in form and in meaning in the course of translation。 Large quantity of examples show that translation can only get relative equality rather than absolute equality due to the cultural differences between source language and target language。 This thesis paper discusses the cultural differences reflected in languages between English and Chinese from the perspectives of material, regional, ideological and religious cultural, aiming to find out the causes and solutions of its untranslatability in language translation。94327

People who are interested in translation may find that untranslatability is undoubtedly one of the core problems we are confronted with in this field。 Since translation has been in existence for thousands of years and many great works of the western countries have been translated into Chinese, people may think, without any doubt, that everything is translatable。 However, "translatability" is, in fact, not an easy and simple thing as people thought it to be。 It has been a hot topic in translation field, for a long time and different people hold different opinions。 As a matter of fact, in the history of translation theory, especially in the translation history of the western world, the dispute between translatability and untranslatability has always remained one of the core issues in translation theory。
