Abstract English reading plays a very important role in English teaching and learning and it can help gain students language knowledge and improve language competence. What’s more, about half scores of College Entrance English Examination is testing the reading abilities of students. The traditional teaching method is the largest problem leading to students’ low reading achievements. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to explore a new method for English reading teaching. Cooperative learning is considered as one of the greatest successes in the field of education and it is a good way to improve the present situation. The purpose of the research is to confirm whether cooperative learning has better effect on improving senior students’ reading abilities and arousing students’ interest in English reading than traditional teaching method.27285
The subjects of the research are students in a key high school in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province. The research lasts for eight weeks. The students are from Class four and Class six of Grade one. The Class four is the experimental class with the help of cooperative learning method while the Class six is the controlled class which adopt the traditional method. A Pre-test is given to both experimental class and controlled class before the experiment and a Post-test is given to both of them after the experiment. The aim of the two English test is to confirm whether cooperative learning has better effect on improving students’ reading abilities than traditional teaching method. Two questionnaires only given to the experimental class are to confirm whether students’ interest in English is aroused via cooperative learning. Theoretical basis of the research is cooperative learning.
The results of the research shows that cooperative learning has better effect on improving senior students’ reading abilities than traditional teaching method and cooperative learning can arouse students’ interest in English reading. It is feasible and beneficial to apply cooperative learning to English reading class in senior high school.

摘要英语阅读在英语教学和英语学习中都起到重要作用。它可以帮助学生积累语言知识和提高语言能力,更重要的是,对英语阅读能力的考察比例在高考中超过一半。传统的教学方法是导致学生阅读成果不高的重要原因。因此,教师有必要探索和发现一种新的教学方法。合作学习被认为是教育领域的一大成功并且它是改善现在教学情况的好方法。本次研究的主要目的在于验证在提高高中生英语阅读能力方面和提高学生对英语阅读的兴趣方面,合作学习是否比传统教学方法更有效。
本次研究的对象来自江苏省徐州市的某所重点高中。此次研究历时8周。研究对象是高一四班和高一优尔班的学生。高一四班是实验班,采用合作学习教学方法;高一优尔班是对照班,采用传统教学方法。实验开始前将会对两个班进行一次前测,实验结束后再对两个班进行一次后测,目的在于验证合作学习是否比传统教学方法更有利于学生阅读能力的提高。实验前后将对实验班各进行一次问卷调查,目的在于验证合作学习是否能提高学生对英语阅读的兴趣。此次研究的理论基础是合作学习。
研究结果表明:合作学习在提高学生英语阅读能力方面和提高学生对英语阅读的兴趣方面比传统教学方法更有效。此次研究证明将合作学习应用于英语阅读是切实可行的并且将更有利于英语教学。
