This thesis mainly talks about the cultural connotations of the six basic color words in English. The first part is the brief introduction; the second part is about the color words, culture and the relationship between them; the cultural connotations of basic color words in English are the content of the third part; there are some causes for the cultural connotations of the basis color words in the forth part and the last part is the conclusion. If we grasp the method of translation in the specific context, we can fully understand the culture of English countries.
II. Color Words and Culture
2.1 Definition of Color Words
Color, the co-product of the spectrum of light reflected or transmitted by visual impressions, is a kind of human perception that people cognize the objective world. It has a close relationship with our life, to some extent, people lives on color. Sometimes we can see the rainbow in our daily life. There are seven colors reflected from rainbow. And there are a lot of symbols recording color in human languages—color words.
And what is color word? It always means a word with color, which can refer to pure color or emotional color. For example, in this sentence “This is a red skirt”, the word “red” only refers to the color of the skirt. Besides, “green-eyed” stands for “嫉妒,眼红” in Chinese. There are three types of color words: basic color words, physical color words and emotional color words. All of these can directly express national culture and spirit character of different people around the world.
