    1 Introduction
The Shawshank Redemption is a novel written by Stephen King (born September 21, 1947)who was born in September 1947 in a poor family in Maine of America and studied English literature in the state university. He is an American author of contemporary horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy. Since the 80’s to the 90’s, in the American bestseller list of calendar year, his novels always ranked first. The Shawshank Redemption was published in 1982 and won the prize in 1994, and in the same year, his works—The pulp fiction,Forrest Gump, Four weddings and a funeral also won the prize. The Shawshank Redemption was set in the year, which America's political corruption had affected the prison. This book was the most outstanding magnum opus of Stephen King, and included four of his novellas. At the same time, its English version was on the New York Times bestseller list title, and sold two million and eighty thousand copies that year in the United States. At present, the book has been translated into thirty-one languages. One of the most famous novels is Oscar-winning seven nominations, known as the most perfect in the history of the cinema The Shawshank Redemption.
In the story, the young banker Andy was accused of killing his wife and her lover, resulting in being condemned to life imprisonment. And no one could prove his innocence. After several years, Andy knew that he was not the murderer and wanted to re-examine his issue to get discharged. But he failed due to the corruption of the prison’s managers. In spite of being tortured mentally and physically in the Shawshank prison, Andy never gave up. After more than 20 years’ efforts and perseverance, in the end, he succeeded in escaping from jail with his wisdom, and gets a free life on the beach in Mexico. The book shows us an explicit idea that is “institutionalization”.
The book seems just telling a story about a man how to succeed in escaping from the prison, but what it really wants to express is the theme that the institutionalization of the prison reflects the reality that many people are fettered by the external environment. The book shows the key word –institutionalization. What Andy fights for is more liberation from institutionalization than jailbreak, in which the jail is just like a symbol of institutionalization. When you are fettered by the external environment and stuck in the institutionalization, how can you liberate yourself? Just like Andy, use your willpower, perseverance and wisdom to obtain the self-redemption and never give up hope.

I would like to use methods of comparison, analogy, analogical rhetorical devices, such as the thesis reasoning are analyzed in the case of qualitative quantitative, and achieve the purpose that proved the common ground between Andy in the Story and the real life of us. This paper is pided into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part expounds the word “institutionalization” and to analyze its characteristics. The third part mainly analyzes the main reason behind the success of the hero Andy in this novel. The fourth part explains the emergence of “institutionalization” can let a person feel in what environment. The fifth part functions as a conclusion. With the help of materials, reference books and journals are collected from the library and the Internet. I would like to explain the horrible of institutionalization in our daily life and how to finish Self-Redemption become the highlight thesis I want to research in this paper. And through The Shawshank Redemption we should know, “he has done better. We can do still better!”
