Chapter two gives the definition of “reading” and reviews the previous studies of English reading teaching both at home and abroad in brief, including three reading models: top-down reading model, bottom-up reading model, interactive reading model.
Chapter three is the core part of this paper. It is about the analysis of questionnaire which is based on the actual situation in senior high school and then gives some suggestions for improvement.
Chapter four serves as a conclusion. It gives the paper’ results and points out the paper’s importance and limitations.
2 Literature review
2.1 Definition of Reading
Many foreign and domestic scholars and researchers had given “reading” a definition. Linguist Bloomfield(1942) believed that reading is a signal conversion from visual to auditory. Nunan(2001) thought that reading is the process of meaning construction with all the acquired knowledge before reading, and then readers can gain the information they wanted from the material. Goodman(1971) described reading as a “psycho-linguistic guessing game” by which a reader tries his best to reconstruct a message which has been encoded by a writer as a graphic display. The domestic scholar Zhu(1994) considered that reading is the process which through reading skills, readers understand the author’s meaning expressed by language symbols and then communicate with the author. Hu(1990) believed that reading comprehension is readers who give meaning to the words, rather than readers perceive the meaning of words. Hu(1998) argued that reading comprehension is the thought process of conjecture, analysis, induction and dissolution, which based on the reader’s certain vocabulary and grammar as well as according to the cultural background knowledge.
Generally speaking, reading is a process of physiological activities and psychological activities combined, aiming to understand the contents of the text and access to information, which is the thought experience after readers reading the text. Reading is one of the basic skills to master a foreign language, and it exerts a promoting influence on improving listening, speaking and writing skills.
