    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of the main obstacles to the English reading speed and to discuss how to improve their English reading speed so as to complete the reading task. The 21st century is an information era, reading is the main way to get information and it is also a basic skill to learn English which is mainly used in international exchange and modern computers and networks in today’s increasing globalization. Comprehension is not only the basis for reading, but also the purpose of reading. Reading speed is the guarantee to achieve the purpose of reading. It is impossible to obtain information quickly from the article if there is no certain speed.
        Reading speed as an important manifestation of reading ability has been widely concerned. It has received the attention of both researchers and educators since the beginning of the last century when the American scientist Huey proposed that the speed of reading was important within scientific and educational environments (Huey 2007). Numerous studies have been conducted on the need and efficacy of the development of reading speed for learners at different educational stages. Domestic and foreign scholars study reading speed and reading ability from various approach. Some scholars adopted  the combined methods of empirical research and theoretical research. The empirical methods that adopted in some theses includes investigation methods, experimental research and action research. Some scholars tried to find out the obstacles of reading English for different kinds of readers through questionnaire surveys and interviews. While some scholars mainly focused on the countermeasures to improve the readers’ reading ability. And a large number of scholars took the students English reading teaching as the starting point and foothold, several kinds of teaching method have been improved to strengthen the students' reading ability. Also some scholars attempted to explore the methods of training reading ability from the angle of learning interests.
