A Study of Metaphor Translation in Fortress Besieged from Dynamic Equivalence Theory
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the research
Ever since the dawn of human history, translation has served as a kind of communicational activity between different peoples. Nowadays, because of the rapid development of internalization and globalization, translation is playing an increasingly important role between different countries, especially in the aspect of cross-cultural exchanges. Having realized this, the Chinese government has attached more importance to the translation of Chinese classics while adopting the “going out” strategy of Chinese culture.
However, as both a figure of speech and a cognitive way, metaphor is culturally- specific, which inevitably leads to more difficulties in its translation, posing great challenge on translators. Though metaphor and metaphor translation are topics heatedly discussed during the long history of human civilization in both China and western countries, there is so far no satisfactory ways to translate metaphors in literary classics. Therefore, the study on metaphor translation now is far from enough and still has a long way to go.
1.2About Fortress Besieged
Ch’ien Chung-shu, a gifted and well-known critical realistic master in the 1940s, has created his unique literary world which is sparking with his sensitive and genuine feelings towards the real world. He has exerted so great an influence in the past 20 years that even leads to a specific phenomenon of “Qian hit”. His masterpiece, Fortress Besieged, is regarded as one of the greatest Chinese modern novels with brilliant metaphors featuring its infective humor, extraordinary wisdom as well as keen insight into human nature.
Fortress Besieged is a love story about the marriage life and career experiences of some young Chinese intellectuals who just come back home from overseas studies. The experiences of the main characters in the novel are typical of the intellectuals at that time, a time of war when ideas clash and people being besieged by incomprehensible forces (Kelly,2003,p.24)
