As the development of new curriculum reform, people pay more and more attention to the usage of classroom language. Scholars in our country did a lot of researches on the usage of classroom language and achieved certain results. There will be more and more people continuing to deepen the study of classroom language. And this paper aims at talking about the use of classroom language in primary school.
Classroom language is a very important language which has been used in the teaching. It plays an important part in the primary school education. Correct and standard classroom language can create a good learning environment, and consequently stimulating students’ interests in learning English, mobilizing students’ confidence and enthusiasm in English learning. Meanwhile, using correct classroom language will inspire the students’ ability to study language. If all the teachers can use the languages properly for teaching, all the students will study in a free, comfortable and wonderful environment. According to the character and content of classroom language, the English classroom language in primary school can be pided into five patterns,the beginning language, asking language, question language, estimating language and concluding language. Teachers’ thinking mode and teaching decision-making play an organizing and guiding role for teachers’ behavior, and constitute the background of teaching and learning (Westerman 292). How to use the classroom language correctly to improve the quality and effectiveness of English Teaching in primary schools is a question that should be thought by every primary school teacher.
Ⅱ.The Major Patterns and Functions of Classroom Language
According to the character and content of classroom language, the English classroom language in primary school can be pided into five patterns, the beginning language, asking language, questioning language, evaluation language and concluding language.
2.1 Beginning Language and Its Function
It includes “Good morning/afternoon, everyone!” “How are you feeling today, boys and girls?” “It’s time for our class.” “Let’s start our class.” and so on. The beginning languages don’t have complex structure and profound meaning. Its function looks like some idioms which appear in the Chinese. Although they are not magnificent words and expressions, they can help teachers to express some special care and respect for students. If we can use some friendly expression between teachers and students, we will create a good environment for students to study. Students will pay more attention to listening to their teachers. They will have a good mood to study this subject. It is easy for teachers to build a good relationship with students.
Good beginning language can make a class go on smoothly, and can make teachers and students communicate with each other more frequently. They can find more topics to talk about the passage that they should learn in the class. Such as a good weather, a holiday activity, an experience, a story and so on. They are very short and lovely, not only help students to relax, but also help students understand the text better. Therefore, it can create the function of warm-up making the class colorful.
2.2 Asking Language and Its Function
In the teaching activity of English in the primary school, the asking language is an important language for teachers to begin and organize the class. It can help teachers to get a good result in his class, so it has been used widely in the primary school teaching. According to its function and character, it can be pided into several types.
In order to make the students to study hard, teachers often use asking language to improve the efficiency of the class. Such as “Please open your book.” “Stand up, please.” “Hands up/down.”
In order to make the class very quiet and create a good surroundings for students to study, teachers like to use some languages and expressions to control the class. Because some students who lake the ability to control themselves often talk about something without studying, it is necessary for teachers to use this kind of language. Such as “Hush!” “Be quiet, please.” “More attention, please.” “Do not talk any more.” These simple languages can make students concentrate on studying in class. Thus, they can understand the teachers easily.
