CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
With the emergency of the reform of the New Curriculum, the New Curriculum Standards for the English Language Teaching in Junior High Schools set advanced requirements for the students’ comprehensive competence to use English. Writing and speaking serving as productive skills, play an increasingly significant part, so that teachers pay more attention to the teaching of English writing in junior high schools in China. In real classroom teaching, however, a lot of teachers spend a lot of time in correcting, marking and commenting on the students’ compositions, less aware of the importance of raising efficiency in the writing teaching. Besides, although students spend much time learning to write, their writing ability is still far from satisfactory. These problems are serious in the writing teaching classrooms, owing to the lack of better teaching method.
This thesis covers a study concerning the improvement of the English writing teaching in junior high schools with the application of Community Language Learning. The current situation of the English writing teaching in junior high schools, the students’ obstacles in English writing and solutions to these problems will be discussed here.
1.2 Significance of the Study
Community Language Learning (CLL) absorbs in many theories of psychological counseling method so that it is widely used in many aspects of foreign language teaching, but there are little systematic researches on its application to the teaching of English writing in junior high schools. As has been proved by many studies, the Community Language Learning is highly effective in releasing students’ anxiety, decreasing the reliance on text and overcoming the lack of knowledge expression, and that the three functions of CLL are of instructing significance in helping students to overcome language obstacles. It can be used in the English writing teaching and greatly improve teachers’ teaching efficiency and students’ writing proficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to find a practical mode of teaching English writing in the classroom by integrating CLL into it.
