1. Introduction
1.1 The Background of the Research
In thousands of years, the formation of Chinese traditional family culture was on the basis of self-sufficient agricultural economy, and it adapted to the small-scale peasant economy which relied on the blood relationship, and this kind of traditional family culture had been immortal until nineteenth century. At the end of the nineteenth century, with the advancement of social modernization, the traditional Chinese family culture started declining, and family culture gradually transformed from the tradition to the modern type. This kind of situation forces the whole society to compare the differences between Chinese and American culture and faces up to the importance of the healthy development of family culture, and it is imperative to confront with the the construction of family culture in China.
Film is an important record of activities and is closely related to the daily life of people. Film as a bridge, it is possible to connect two different worlds and build communication between different cultures. To some extent, the film has an indispensable role in intercultural communication. The film Pushing Hands is a good platform for intercultural communication, and it is a mirror of family culture.
1.2 The Significance of the Research
In the former research of family culture, for example, Xiao Shangjun(肖尚君,2007:125) pays attention to the relationship of personality and family; Di Yanhua(狄艳华,2002:25) mentions the marriage in family culture. The majority of scholars focus on one or two parts of the different family culture but lack of comprehensive comparison. Therefore this paper wishes to make a relative comprehensive comparison in family culture between China and America in order to help the healthy development of Chinese traditional family culture, avoiding the negative tendency---refusing the best of the foreign culture or denying itself and accepting foreign culture completely.
