A study on Picture-book Instruction in Primary School English Learning
Abstract In recent years, teaching English in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom to young learners (YLs) of primary school through English picture books bears many prospects for an effective and meaningful language instruction as English picture books can help to contextualize the new language providing audiovisual input along with the story narration. In this study, the value of picture-book instruction on English learning for YLs is to be investigated. The potential role of using such an approach in EFL classroom is assessed in terms of the improvement of YLs’ English level and cognitive competence. Four tests have been done in the form of reading, reciting, role playing as well as public speaking in order to figure out the value of English picture books. Some implications can be drawn from the outcome of the study to English language teaching and learning, and thus offer teachers and parents a new choice of English teaching method.

摘要近年来,在“将英语作为第二语言”的小学课堂中以英语绘本为载体教授年轻学习者英语,越来越体现出了绘本教学法作为一种有效且有意义的语言教学法的广阔前景,因为绘本不仅能够将新的语言知识融入到情境中,同时伴随着故事叙述也为学习者提供了视觉和听觉的输入`优尔~文-论+文'网www.youerw.com。因此,本论文将研究绘本教学法对于小学英语学习者在英语学习上的价值。绘本教学法在英语教学中所存在的潜在价值将通过小学英语学习者英语水平和认知能力的提高来进行评估。为了解绘本教学的价值,作者分别采取了朗读、背诵、角色扮演以及公众演讲的形式对小学英语学习者做了四次测试。研究结果对于英语语言教学与学习具有一定的启示与借鉴意义,从而在英语教学方法上能够为教师及家长提供一种新的选择。
