1. Introduction
Wuthering Heights is a novel written by British novelist Emily Bronte, and it was published in 1848. It mainly tells the story of love between Catherine and Heathcliff, which is full of crazy love and brutal hatred. It is based on love, showing the collision between human nature and social oppression. The human nature is so complex that it always can result to different emotions distinctly-love and hatred. Nevertheless, when it was published, some critics even described it as full of morbid and paganism. It did not get popular before half a century ago. From then on, Wuthering Heights has highly been respected by the public; it is not only because of its unique characters but also the theme. It was also recognized as a modern Steve Jobs in literature. Therefore, somebody has said, “in the Victorian era, Wuthering Heights was the only novel that uncovered by the time of the dust and always showed its splendor”(Yang Jingyuan, 1993:6)

Reviewing Wuthering Heights’s controversial issues is mainly because of the creation of the image of the main character Heathcliff. The main artistic achievement of Wuthering Heights is also in that it creates a flesh-and-blood character Heathcliff, so it can not deny that Emily Bronte makes a great contribution to shape this character. In recent years, many scholars have written many articles to analyze and discuss about the hero Heathcliff. Sun Lina made a conclusion in reconsideration on Heathcliff’s image in Wuthering Heights, she pointed out that Heathcliff’s transformation from a kind boy to crazy avenger after distorting human nature and the recovery of humanity depend on many factors.(Sun Lina, 2008:3) It indicated that obsession of hierarchy and prejudice against persons in the 19th century in British did a serious harm to human nature. In addition, it also showed that a person had a prominent competence to keep own dignity. Fu Qiang and Sheng Liwen also wrote in the paper Analysis of Heathcliff’s humanity-after reading Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights, “in the small world created by Emily, the relationship between persons are more simple than ones in the realistic life. Only two extremes are left as if complex and ample humanity had been concentrated, not intense love but fierce hatred.”(Fu Qiang & Sheng Liwen, 1999:3) Just because of this, the hero Heathcliff’s character also reflected two extremes. These analyses are based on different attitudes to personal images, Heathcliff’s lot, personality, thinking and tragic ending. He is like a man who has thousand faces. As Shakespeare has put, “there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand eyes.” That is to say, when readers read from different views, they will find different connotations hidden behind the story. Heathcliff is a complexity of the contradiction, so it is difficult to define completely him.
