Title An empirical study on consecutive interpretation mistakes due to syntactic differences between Chinese and English
Abstract
Consecutive interpretation is a process of converting an expression in a source language into an expression with a comparable meaning in a target language consecutively after one party has finished speaking. With the increasing of foreign exchanges and cooperation, interpretation work is needed more than ever. Because of the syntactic differences of English and Chinese, some untypical expressions of a target language can be easily found in interpretation. This thesis studies English-Chinese consecutive interpretation from the aspect of syntactic differences. By carrying out an empirical study among English majors, the final results are analyzed and the mistakes are classified. At last, this thesis provides some suggestion on interpretation teaching that teachers and students should put some emphasis on the syntactic differences between English and Chinese and comprehend the sentence from a macroscopic view, thus making the expression more typical.

1. Introduction
With the deepening process of world integration, China is undergoing an ever broad and deep exchange with the outside world in every aspect of people's lives. International trade and cooperation scopes increase day by day. Hollywood is already part of Chinese movie choice. Thousands of Fortune 500 have set their office or joint ventures in China and millions of Chinese have academic exchanges abroad. International activities like conferences or forums are so often held in China. In such circumstances, English should not be an obstacle, hindering the exchanges of ideas and opinions. Interpretation, as a bridge between English and Chinese, can shorten the distance between two totally different countries and convey the information more precisely, eliminating the misunderstanding in literal meaning. These are social requirements that stimulate the growth of interpretation. The interpreter's function is to convey every semantic element (tone and register) and every intention and feeling of the message that the source-language speaker is directing to target-language recipients. For English majors, interpreter is also a corresponding profession which needs a solid foundation of English grammar and vocabulary and a lot of practices. Now interpretation has received increasing attention as a major study object among Chinese scholars.
