Abstract Compliment is a kind of courtesy, which is used to express polite praise that the speaker talks to his object directly or indirectly。 In the process of interpersonal communication, compliment acts as the adjusting atmosphere, which not only can be used to express gratitude, encouragement, compliment, praise, respect and so on, but also can open a conversation with a straightforward approach。 This paper will contrast and analyze the English and Chinese compliments and their responses from the pragmatic perspective。 Meanwhile it will analyze the specific cause of the difference and finally discuss some communicative strategies that can be effective use of compliment and its response in intercultural communication between English and Chinese。 For this reason, the strategy can guide people's verbal communicative behaviors in the two different cultures, build a harmonious communication atmosphere and put forward the communicative activities successfully。   83883

摘 要称赞语，是礼貌用语的一种，用来表达说话者对其说话对象的一种直接的或委婉的赞扬，在人际交往过程中，称赞语充当调节气氛的作用，可以用来表达感谢，鼓励，称赞，表扬，尊敬等，也可以直接作为一种打开话题的方式。本文将从语用学的角度，对比分析英汉称赞语及其应答的不同，并剖析造成这种不同的具体原因，最终探讨出英汉跨文化交际中有效使用称赞语及其应答的交际策略，以此引导英汉两种不同文化背景下人们的言语交际行为，建立和谐的交流氛围，使交际活动顺利进行。

A Comparative Analysis on Compliment and its Responses between English and Chinese in a Pragmatic Approach
