Abstract Compliment is a kind of courtesy, which is used to express polite praise that the speaker talks to his object directly or indirectly。 In the process of interpersonal communication, compliment acts as the adjusting atmosphere, which not only can be used to express gratitude, encouragement, compliment, praise, respect and so on, but also can open a conversation with a straightforward approach。 This paper will contrast and analyze the English and Chinese compliments and their responses from the pragmatic perspective。 Meanwhile it will analyze the specific cause of the difference and finally discuss some communicative strategies that can be effective use of compliment and its response in intercultural communication between English and Chinese。 For this reason, the strategy can guide people's verbal communicative behaviors in the two different cultures, build a harmonious communication atmosphere and put forward the communicative activities successfully。 83883
