1 Introduction
1.1 Significance of the Study
It is well-known that the Harry Potter series have gained immense popularity all over the world. Part of its success lies in the various fantastic beasts with features of creativity and persified sources of origins. Enormous questions have been asked by the Harry Potter fans about how those fantastic beasts come to the writer’s minds and where they come from. J. K Rowling, the writer, had to write a book entitled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to give a detailed explanation.
However, these strange and interesting words definitely bring translators many difficulties and challenges. In China, People’s Literature Press has published a simplified version of the Harry Potter series which has aroused numerous praises as well as criticisms from Chinese readers. Since almost all of the words about the fantastic beasts Rowling has used cannot find complete equivalents in Chinese, I cannot help reflecting the following questions: How could the translators view the translations? How do we explain these translation phenomena? Is there any standard whereby to decide how to translate? To answer these questions, the author of the present thesis finds it very necessary to make a detailed analysis of the process of translation, or mental process of translating.
