1。 Introduction
First of all, this chapter introduces the background of the research, then it focus on its purpose and significance。 Finally it talks about the structure of this thesis。
1。1 The Background of the Research
Since our world has developed in such rapid speed, there is an urgent need for people to learn English for it plays an irreplaceable role in our daily life。 As Steven Krashen (2003) claimed, “it is difficult in today’s world to be active and successful in international business, politics, scholarship, or science without considerable competence in English”。
Concerning the significances of English, more and more Chinese parents start to let their children learn English ever since kindergarten。 Moreover, the Ministry of Education in China required that all the students should begin to study English as the second language from Grade 3 in primary school since 2001。 Meanwhile, as for elementary English teachers, how to explore an effective way to help beginners to learn English well is a huge challenge。 What’s more, students in Grade 5 are even supposed to spell some simple words and it makes English vocabulary teaching become harder than before。
As British linguist Wilkins described “without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed。” (Wilkins; 1972)。 It shows that vocabulary teaching plays an extremely important part in English teaching in primary school。 But there are many problems in English vocabulary teaching in elementary schools。 Most students face great difficulty in spelling, reading and memorizing new English words。 As for students from Grade 5, their biggest challenge is vocabulary spelling。 How to help these students to overcome the difficulty of vocabulary spelling is the most urgent thing for English teachers who teach Grade 5 in primary school to confront with。
Phonics was derived in American reading instruction in 1790s and has been introduced to our country recently。 Then, it has been used all over the country in private training institutions。 Moreover, it is considered to be the easiest, the fastest and most effective way to teach students how to spell English words, especially for primary school students。
However, there are still many English classes in which students acquired the new English words mostly by repetition。 Most of the English teachers rarely introduce this method to the students for memorizing the new words。 For such a situation, students’ spelling ability is going worse and worse while their spelling ability is needed more and more。
