Abstract Emily Dickinson(1830-1886) is a famous female poet in the history of American literature in the 19th century. She is honored as the pioneer of the twentieth century British American modern poetry. She has written nearly 1800 poems in her life. Her poem themes mainly include love, nature and death. She gives expression to her passionate emotion. She uncovers the secret of love with bold and straightforward verse and describes nature with exquisite and profound images. Although leading a life of seclusion, Emily Dickinson has composed many poems in which her sharp and unique understanding of the world is depicted. Of all 1775 poems published in 1955 by Thomas Johnson, more than 500 are about nature. Being influenced by two conflicting thoughts of her time, her nature-themed poems are mixed with both Puritanism and Transcendentalism (Bi,2000; Fu ,2000; Su ,2000; Wu,2000; Xu ,2004; Hu, 2007; Wang,2009). The thesis will provide the readers a new perspective to appreciate the poem themes of Emily Dickinson based on the analysis of her life and major poems. That is her desire for love and love for nature. So that the readers have a more comprehensive understanding of her poems. 51839
This paper, taking Emily Dickinson’ s nature-themed poems Nature, is what we see and love-themed Wild Nights-- Wild Nights poems as an example, aims at analyzing her unique ideas about nature and love.There are mainly two purposes: firstly, to arose more interest of Chinese and overseas scholars in Emily Dickinson and her poems in the hope that more translation versions can be published; secondly, to find out some practical and useful ways to deal with the poems so that people can understand them further and better. Only in this way can we bring profound American culture to the whole world and promote cultural exchanges between different countries.
