AbstractFrom the perspective of consumerism, this thesis analyses the image of main character, Caroline Meeber of Sister Carrie written by Theodore Dreiser。 This thesis discusses features of consumption of Carrie from material consumption, emotional consumption and body consumption during the process when she become a Broadway Actress from an innocent country girl。 and further illustrates consumption view of Carrie, whose consumption is conspicuous one。 And then the thesis explains consumerism of Sister Carrie from three aspects, which includes desire, Carrie’s symbolic value of consumerism and Carrie’s dual identity。 The consumerism reveals people’s distorted value and Material desires dominate。 In the end, according to practical situation of China, the thesis displays same problems in Chinese society, explains how to establish a correct consumption view。76937

摘要本文从消费zhuyi的角度分析了西奥多·德莱赛的作品《嘉莉妹妹》中女主人公嘉罗琳·米贝尔的形象特点。小说展现了嘉莉妹妹在大城市的沉浮经历,并通过嘉莉描述物质性消费文化在人们身上的消极影响。本文开始先描述嘉莉从一个农村无知少女变成百老汇明星过程中她的物质消费,情感消费和身体消费来以此说明嘉莉的消费特点并进一步说明嘉莉的消费是一种炫耀式消费,然后从消费社会中的欲望,嘉莉的消费观中的符号价值和嘉莉妹妹的双重身份三个方面详细说明小说中体现的消费zhuyi,揭示出当时社会中人们扭曲的价值观以及物欲至上的错误观念。最后结合当下的中国社会现状,指出同样存在的问题以及指出人们应树立正确的价值观。

1。 Introduction
Theodore Dreiser, an innovative and naturalist writer in American literature。 He is famous for breaking away from conventions and he is the leading figure in a national literary movement in which he opened an door towards the realistic and critical descriptions of life。 Dreiser portrays the real life in American society and leads to a new field of faithful, bravery and passion of life。论文网
As we all know, Theodore Dreiser was born in a large, poor, religious and immigrant family at Terre Haute, Indiana on August 27,1871。 The family’s perennial poverty forced frequent moves between small Indiana town and Chicago in search of a lower cost of living。 In his later life life, Dreiser had a bitter experience and his family was facing the material deprivation。 However, he still spoke and wrote of his mother with unswerving affection。 The harsh experience of poor life as a youth and his yearnings for wealth and success become dominant themes of his novels。 He had little education and dropped out from high school to seek job in Chicago。 With his high school teacher’s financial support, He studied in Indiana University for one year。 Through reading some works by T。H。Huxley and John Tyndall and adopting the speculations of Herbert Spencer, he knew some social reality。
