摘 要委婉语是由希腊语发展过来的词，是一种存在于人类言语交际活动中的语言、文化和社会现象。外交语言也存在着很多的委婉语。近年来，有学者从语用学的角度对外交委婉语进行了研究。本文借鉴前人对外交委婉语的定义，分类，特点等研究成果的分析，从语用学中的合作原则和礼貌原则角度探讨外交语言运用委婉语的现象。通过列举并分析相关的例子，说明委婉语的正确使用能够帮助外交人员有效处理国际事务，进一步维持国家间的友好关系，从而避免一些尴尬场面的发生。82828

Abstract  Originated from Greek, euphemism is a linguistic, cultural and social phenomenon in human communication。 Euphemisms also exist in diplomatic language。 In recent years, some scholars began to study euphemisms in diplomatic language from the perspective of pragmatics。 This paper will analyze the use of diplomatic euphemisms from Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle based on the definition, classification, and characteristics of diplomatic euphemism proposed by predecessors。 In addition, typical examples will be analyzed in terms of pragmatics to help diplomatic officials to avoid appearance of embarrassing situations in diplomatic communications。

The Analysis of Euphemisms from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle in Diplomacy

Euphemism, as a common phenomenon in all languages of societies, has aroused huge attention among human beings for a long time。 It is one of the language strategies used by people to express their wills or intentions indirectly。 In other words, it can avoid occurrence of unpleasant things。 Besides, it is deeply rooted in society and it strongly reflects social values。 And to express politeness, people usually use the euphemisms。 Enright (1985) wrote, “A language without euphemisms would be a defective instrument of communication。 Without euphemisms the world would grind to a halt, universal animosity covering all” (125)。论文网

With the development of economy and society, euphemism plays an essential role in human beings life, which not only strengthens people’s relationship between each other, but also avoids occurrence of embarrassing situations。 It is well-known that euphemism has a great impact in human beings daily life as well as in diplomatic affairs of all countries。 Therefore, it is necessary that statesmen and diplomats resort to use euphemisms when they make international conversations。 As an indispensable part of English language, euphemism has aroused heated discussions among many scholars and researchers。 Euphemisms have been studied as a linguistic phenomenon from the perspectives of semantics, pragmatics and other aspects。 However, those studies of euphemisms in terms of pragmatics are not specific。 The author of this paper will study euphemisms from a new perspective which is called diplomatic euphemism。 In fact, it is necessary that to have a further study in euphemisms。
