Abstract Euphemism is a common phenomenon in all languages, which plays a crucial role in daily communication。 Though many scholars have made lots of researches in this field, we can find that there are still many barriers for the speakers in daily communication, especially in intercultural communication。 Therefore, this paper mainly focuses on euphemism, analyzing its linguistic features, pragmatic functions and principles。 Meanwhile this paper not only explains the intercultural communication in detail but analyzes the application of euphemism in intercultural communication, such as in economics and people’s social communication, which aims at helping speakers enhance the understanding of euphemism, appropriately using the euphemisms in intercultural communication so as to achieve a successful communication。

The Application of Euphemism in Intercultural Communication

I。 Introduction

Along with social development and globalization, people from different countries or nations have more frequent contact and exchanges of information。 Therefore, intercultural communication has become more widespread in many people’s daily lives。 Euphemism is a common linguistic tool in communication from ancient times。 As a great linguistic lubricant, people are becoming more conscious of euphemism’s application in intercultural communication。 However, because of cultural differences, there are many communicative obstacles in intercultural communication。 In order to make smooth communication, euphemism always is expressed in different ways to exert its crucial function in intercultural communication。 Thus, it deserves to be studied to understand its features and appropriate application in intercultural communication。 Some scholars have made lots of achievements in the perspectives of rhetoric, pragmatics and sociolinguistics。 Pragmatically, this paper will give more descriptions of euphemism and intercultural communication with a view to enhancing the people’s ability to use euphemism in intercultural communication。

This paper consists of five parts。 Part One will give the general introduction of this paper。 Part Two will analyze euphemism and intercultural communication in detail。 The speaker must understand the relation of euphemism to intercultural communication。 Part Three will focus on the principles of euphemism in communication。 And Part Four will discuss the application of euphemism in intercultural communication。 This paper will mainly talk about some typical euphemism in economics and social lives, for example, death, disease, sex and so on。 Part Five is the conclusion of this paper。论文网

2。1。1Definitions of Euphemism 

Euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon applied in human’s social life。 The word “euphemism” comes from the Greek word “euphemism” that means “fare speech”。 In Greek, apart from “ism” as a noun suffix, the prefix “eu-” means “good” or “well”, its root “phene” meaning “speech” or “saying”。 Therefore, we can find its  meaning is “to speak with good words”。 What’s more, the definition of euphemism in the New Edition of the Oxford Concise Dictionary (1976) is written as “substitution of mild or vague or roundabout expression for harsh or direct one”。
