My profound gratitude first goes to Associate Pro. Cao Xia, my supervisor, for her constant guidance and encouragement in the process of my writing. She offered me considerable and constructive advice, practical and profound suggestions on the completion of my paper. Just under her careful and patient guidance, I begin to get a clear idea of the paper and fully frame it out. Without her support and help, the completion of the present thesis would turn out to be impossible.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who have ever taught me throughout my college years, especially Prof. Huai Peixin, my British and American Literature course teacher. Her profound knowledge of western literature led me into the world of literature, and also inspired me to make efforts in English learning. I am also very grateful to all other teachers of the School of Foreign Languages who gave me direct or indirect help during my study in the college.
I am also grateful to my classmates and roommates for their encouragement, support, comments and wise advice.
Last, I wish to devote this paper to my parents for their everlasting dedication that they have shown since I was just a little child.
Abstract
Oscar Wilde, the advocate of aestheticism in the late 19th century, whose works cover many styles and are seldom surpassed by others, was a genius in British literature. He was noted for his colorful and tactful language using and peculiar and fancy trappings. As an advocate for “art for art’s sake”, Oscar Wilde had evoked the imagination of the century and created myth and legendry and was remembered as a writer, an inpidualist, an aesthete, a feminist, a socialist, as well as a nationalist for his adorable and enormous influences on British literature.
Born in the Victorian age, Oscar Wilde experienced the feminism stream. During the 19th century, with a vibrant women’s liberation movement in the UK, females were quickly awakened. Women were no longer contented to be occupied by countless housework and farm work. Instead, they were eager for equality, and sought out ways for self demonstration as men did. Writers also began to attach importance to female portraying with sparing efforts to describe female’s living conditions, social status, characters and behaviors. Wilde also dedicated a lot to this aspect. Among such works, An Ideal Husband (1895) was a representative. As one of Wilde’s popular comedies, An Ideal Husband (1895) has aroused readers’, audiences’, and critics’ attentions since its publication and staging. Moreover, this piece of work carries Oscar Wilde’s view towards woman.
This paper falls into five parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at analyzing feminism and its influence on Wilde. The third part mainly focuses on the interpretation of three main female characters in An Ideal Husband. The fourth part probes into Oscar Wilde’s view towards woman. The fifth part functions as a conclusion.
