In Alice Monroe’s short stories, she uses the writing techniques of postmodern literature widely. Alice Monroe’s Runaway has a lot of material of post-modernism. She describes the characters’ daily life and focus on the trivial affairs of the characters. The characters are living under the traditional society, they have a lot of inner thoughts and eager to escape from the traditional culture. In this story, her writing style is arbitrary and the structure of this story is incoherent.
In this story, she uses the writing techniques of collage. All the plots in this story is scatted, de-centered, inpidualized and de-heroism, which also reflects the creative view which is persified and complicated of the author and the spreading of the traditional culture. Meanwhile, to some extent, this story illustrates that Alice Monroe makes some parody and irony of the traditional woman’s and man’s power role and order. Through the use of post-modernism, Alice Monroe makes this work more attractive and depicts women’s internal world vividly.

Postmodernism regard today’s world as an unstable, uncertain, discontinued, unordered world. (Chen,2005) Nowadays, people start to realize that the change of life is important, the world we live in is not changeless, it keeps changing every moment. In the theory of the postmodernism, the world we live in today is changeable, unpredictable, open and persification. It criticizes the target of the modernism which is to find real truth and permanent truth. The purpose of the postmodernism is to make the world into persity, messy and uncertain.
Postmodern literature, like postmodernism, as a whole, tends to resist definition or classification as a "movement". Indeed, postmodern literature gathers up various modes of critical theory, particularly reader-response and deconstructionist approaches, and the sub-versions of the implicit contract between author, text and reader by which its works are often centralized.
In the postmodern literature, collage is the main writing techniques. Writers use different quotations, references, sentences and even words, make them fit together. This kind of writing techniques is widely using in postmodern literature and make the works get an amazing effect. And collage can be classified into stylistic cottage, space-time collage and narrative collage.
Modernism is rational and postmodernism is irrational, while postmodernism is not only just refuse and reject the rational things, but also carry out some deeply rational opinion and demand.
