A Comparative Study of Cultural Connotations of English and Chinese Dietary Idioms
I. Introduction
This paper aims at making a comparative study of cultural differences between English and Chinese dietary idioms. The study of dietary idioms cannot be separated from culture. Idiom is essence of language, which appeared in the long history of language development and enjoys a long-lasting vitality. It is the mirror of culture and the pearl of a language. Idioms express rich and complex cultural information, such as geological environment, social history, religious beliefs and traditional customs. They are embodied in national characteristics and cultural inpiduality. Before conducting this study, the author has examined core journals and papers related. It was found that the study regarding differences between Chinese and English dietary idioms was neither complete nor comprehensive. Firstly, some studies were made just from the linguistic angle. They attempted to compare between English and Chinese dietary idioms counterparts in a linguistic perspective, such as structural and semantic aspects. Secondly, some studies merely make the differentiation from the cultural angle, without involving the linguistic angle, which causes many previous researches to be insufficient in the depth. For instance, a comparative study written by Yin Li simply makes a comparison between English and Chinese idioms from the cultural angle. Thirdly, many studies only explore the differences from the angle of translating, a study of differences between English and Chinese dietary idioms introducing some translation strategies between English and Chinese dietary idioms, which is not complete and through. The author of this thesis was motivated to conduct this study by two factors: inadequate studies in this area and the author’s great interest in the differences between English and Chinese numerical idioms. Dietary idiom is so fascinating that author is urged to conduct more studies about it. 英汉饮食习语的文化内涵比较研究:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_14434.html
