Although it is set in the late 18th and early 19th century, it retains a fantastic and fascinating experience for modern people。 Until today, more than millions of copies of different editions of this novel have been sold across the world。 And in China, there are many versions of this novel and each of them is popular among readers。
After documentary research, it can be figured out that Chinese scholars’ studies on Pride and Prejudice largely focus on characters, irony, love, marriages and feminism。 Most of them develop their ideas and opinions by giving examples or analyzing five main marriages and characters。 On the other hand, the studies carried out overseas mainly focus on the analysis of the author’s attitude towards marriage and feminism as well as the analysis of characters in this novel。 Although there are many people having researched Pride and Prejudice from many aspects, there are still few people researching on the translations of metaphor based on Nida’s functional equivalence, so it is worthwhile to carry out the research in this regard。
1。2 Rationale and Significance of this Paper
There are many metaphors in the whole novel, and the thesis pides metaphor translations into three aspects: literal translation, metonymy translation, and free translation。 As the functional equivalence theory provides a new method to study translations, the thesis uses Sun Zhili’s version to analyze the translations of metaphor based on the Nida’s functional equivalence and analyze whether Sun’s version conforms to Nida’s theory on the level of meaning, style and culture。文献综述
