Abstract The American female poet——Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) took a special interest in death. She left the world more than 1700 poems, Of all these poems,over 600 are about the subject death. These poems reflected the poetess’s thoughts about death from different angles and levels. This paper focuses its attention on the analysis of a few of Emily Dickinson’s famous poems on the subject of death, which reveal her religious point of view and her pursuit of truth and beauty all through her life.

I. Introduction
Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is a famous and influential American poetess in 19th.She was born on December 10th,1830, in Amherst, a small town in Massachusetts. Emily Dickinson grew up in a family of lawyers. In her youth, her life was quiet and dull. She received formal religious education since she was a child. She refused social life at the age of 25 and lived as a nun. Emily Dickinson wanted to live simply as a complete independent being, so she remained unmarried in her whole life. During the rest of her life, she shut herself up in her house and gave up all civic activities. Emily Dickinson left us more than 1700 poems, of all these poems, only 7 of them were published in her lifetime. We can say that she was a secret poet-one who wrote without others knowing. Emily Dickinson had considerable influence on American modern poetry. Her poems are always with extensive subjects and deep thoughts. She is regarded as one of the pioneers in American poetry. In both style and content, her verse was, "revolutionary" in her day. Owing to the deep exploration of death and immortality, Emily Dickinson has become a puzzle in literary.
In every aspect, the writing style of Emily Dickinson is dramatically different from poets of the same period. Her poems are always short, and the longest of her verse is just50 lines. Each of her works has its own charm, and there are few poets can use such unique creativity to create. Some critics said that Emily Dickinson performed her works with fresh approach, just like no one had written poems. These techniques are of personal touch. So only 6 of her poems were published while she was alive. Emily Dickinson never titled the poem, so it is commonly referred to by its first line.
This thesis will present Emily Dickinson’s poems about death and analyze the death images in the poems. It will also explore the reasons why she wrote so many death themed poems. The paper is pided into five parts. Chapter one briefly presents the main questions which will be discussed in this paper. Chapter two is mainly about the literature review and relative theories. Chapter three analyzes Emily Dickinson’s partiality for death. Chapter four mainly talks about the death images in the poems.
