Has the situation changed? The change of teaching concept is a difficult process。 Although we emphasize the development of students’ communicative competence, we haven’t neglected the importance of grammar teaching。 The core of the issue is how to "optimize" grammar teaching and how to improve its effectiveness。 In order to reach the goal, it is necessary to explore an effective way to improve the efficiency by applying STM to grammar teaching。
1。2 Research Purpose
In general, teaching and illustrating grammar rules should not be overestimated while ignoring the summary of grammar structures or rules is not reasonable in foreign language learning class。 The former can’t let learners be familiar with the meaning and use of grammar while the latter can’t contribute to learners’ constructing the complete form and system of grammar, that is to say, learners may be aware that certain grammar should be employed in this communicative context, but they can’t use the accurate language form for expression, leading to not getting themselves across。
Therefore, based on the above understanding, the purpose of the study is to attempt to prove and demonstrate that STM to grammar teaching is effective in Ss’ grammar learning。
1。3 Research Significance
English grammar learning is a significant part of language learning。 In the process of language teaching, the argument of the role of grammar is not to teach but how to teach and what to teach (Shu, 1996)。 Therefore, in the traditional sense, grammar teaching only based on interpreting is far from enough。 We learn and master the grammar not only to remember the various grammar rules but also to use the grammar properly in different contexts。 Just as Larsen - Freeman (2003) points out that with the development of language, grammar is constantly changing, so the rules of grammar teaching are flexible, which should cultivate students' ability to use grammar structures accurately, meaningfully and appropriately。
From my point of view, firstly, the significance of the study can meet the National English Curriculum requirements, which emphasizes improving Ss’ ability to use English to do things, to get information, to analyze and solve problems, and especially the ability to think and express their ideas using English。 According to the characteristics of STM, the English class under STM should be like this: Language techniques are designed to engage learners in the authentic, functional use of language for meaningful purposes。 In the situational teaching classroom, students ultimately have to use the language productively and receptively, in unrehearsed contexts。
Secondly, it also can meet the requirements of junior Ss’ study and future development。 The students who get good grades always have a good command of grammar knowledge。 In the class taught under STM, the teaching contents will be integrated into vivid and specific situations and activities to present the knowledge, such as dramatic description with teacher’s language, role play, the appreciation of the music, classroom games and so on, which are all based on the specific scenes and can have a certain effect on students’ learning。 Language use is also recognized as serving ideational, interpersonal, and textual functions, which is related to the development of learner’s competence in each。
