摘要《吸血鬼编年史》、《暮光之城》和《吸血鬼日记》是三部20世纪的吸血鬼小说，作品中塑造了多个广为人知的女性吸血鬼形象。相较人类女性而言，吸血鬼女性因超自然能力而更具独立能力。本文以三部作品中的代表性女性吸血鬼人物为研究对象，通过剖析《吸血鬼日记》中的Katherine和Elena、《暮光之城》中的Bella和《吸血鬼编年史》中的吸血鬼女王Akasha的人物形象，展现女性吸血鬼所具备的经济、情感和社会地位方面的独立性，以此折射出现代女性追求独立性格特征的理想。24310

Title Female Characters in American Vampire Novels: A Case Study of Vampire Chronicles, Twilight and Vampire Diaries
Abstract
Vampire Chronicles, Twilight and Vampire Diaries are three vampire novels in which there are many widely known female vampires. Compared with human females, female vampires are more independent due to their super power. This paper chooses representative female vampires in this three novels as research object. Through analyzing Elena and Katherine in Vampire Diaries, Bella in Twilight and Akasha in Vampire Chronicles, this paper shows the female vampires’ independence in economy, emotion and social status and reveals modern woman’s pursuit of independent personality.

1.1 The Three Vampire Novels under Study
1.1.1 Vampire Diaries
L. J. Smith is an American novelist whose youth-themed stories are always mixed with fantasy and romance. Vampire Diaries is a typical example. There are many supernatural beings such as vampires, werewolves, wizards and witches, travelers, doppelgangers and so on in this work. Every one of them has amazing powers along with fatal shortcomings. Among them, Elena and Katherine are two doppelgangers. They look exactly alike but have totally different characters. Generally speaking, Elena is always kind-hearted while Katherine is selfish and evil. However, both of them impress readers with their spirit of independence.
Katherine is one of the major characters in Vampire Diaries. Born in the early 15th century, Katherine had a premarital pregnancy at the age of 16 which humiliated her family. After giving birth to a daughter who was sent away by Katherine’s father, she was exiled to Britain and met Claus who was a half-vampire and half-werewolf, or a hybrid. It was Claus who saved Katherine’s life by turning her into a vampire. At first, Katherine thought she met a reliable man and expected to spend the rest of her life with him. However, she found that Claus just needed her blood to make more hybrids because she was a doppelganger. In order to get rid of Claus’s endless requirements of her blood, Katherine had to begin her journey of escape. She met Salvatore brothers in a small town called Mystic Falls and fell in love with both of them. She turned them into vampires but finally left them because she hated to make the choice between them. Katherine plotted a fake death to leave Salvatore brothers and also to escape from Claus’s chase. However, fate still brought her back to them.
