Abstract Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most unique writers in America. Many great writers in America of his same age often use a romantic tone in their literary works, while Poe's themes were mainly about killing, violence, death, nightmare and evil. At that time in America, death and horror haven't been widely accepted as a kind of aesthetic concept yet. Therefore, it is not difficult to imagine how hard it is for him to gain the understanding and appreciation of his contemporaries.
It was not until the 20th century did scholars pay adequate attention to the value of Poe's works. As a result, a mania of discussing and studying his poems and novels started all over the world. Various literary theories were employed in the researches into his works, however, among them, only a relatively small proportion discussed about the aesthetic implication in his horror stories. In this paper, the features of Edgar Allan Poe's horror story, the aesthetic implication of his story and the methods Poe has used in his horror stories to achieve the aesthetic effect will be talked about.
This paper can be generally pided into five parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part puts emphasis on illustrating features of Poe’s horror stories. The third part is about the aesthetic implication showed in his works. It will demonstrate what kind of beauty the world of horror can bring to his readers. The fourth part talks about the writing methods Edgar Allan Poe uses to create a world of darkness and achieve aesthetic effect. The last part functions as a conclusion. Poe creates a mysterious and horrible world and at the same time demonstrates the charm and beauty involved in horror to his readers.20364

爱伦•坡是美国最具个人风格的作家之一。众多他那个时代的美国著名作家通常都会在他们的文学作品中运用到浪漫的笔调，而爱伦•坡作品中的主题却大多是关于凶杀、暴力、死亡、噩梦和邪恶。在那时的美国，死亡和恐怖还尚未作为一种美学概念而得到人们的广泛认同。因此，我们并不难想象爱伦•坡要获得同时代人的理解和赏识有多么困难。
直到二十世纪，爱伦•坡作品的价值才开始得到学者们的足够重视。由此，世界文坛便掀起了一股对他诗歌和小说的研讨热潮。各式各样的文学理论都被运用到对他作品的研究中。然而，在这些研究之中，只有相对较少一部分是讨论他恐怖小说的中美学意蕴的。在本文中，我将会讨论爱伦•坡恐怖小说中的一些特点，阐述其中的美学意蕴以及爱伦•坡是运用哪些写作手法来达到文章的美学效果。
本篇论文大致可以分为五个部分。第一部分是介绍。第二部分着重于阐述爱伦•坡恐怖小说中的特点。第三部分是关于他作品中所展现出的美学意蕴，恐怖能带给人什么样的美感体会。第四部分讨论爱伦•坡运用于构建暗黑世界和产生美学效果的写作手法。论文的最后一部分是全文的结尾。坡创造了一个恐怖而神秘的世界并向他的读者展示了恐怖之美、其魅力所在。
