Abstract This thesis mainly studies A Thousand Splendid Suns, the second novel of Khaled Hosseini. Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-American writer who takes the lead in concerning about Afghan women and brings profound effects on the contemporary literature.  43426

Scholars have been studying A Thousand Splendid Suns from various angles since its publication. This thesis tries to interpret A Thousand Splendid Suns from the perspective of feminism. Based on the theory of feminist literary criticism, the process of the awakening of female consciousness under oppression is the cutting point of this thesis. By analyzing the whole progress, it reveals the horror of patriarchal society, the author’s worries and hope, as well as the social meaning. 

This thesis is pided into five parts. Chapter one is the brief introduction to the book and the author as well as the purpose and significance of this thesis. Chapter two is about how Afghan women suffer under the oppression of the war and the patriarchal society, taking Mariam and Laila as an example. Chapter three is to analyze the process of how they change from enduring to awakening. Chapter four is the struggle they have made for their independence and freedom. And the last chapter is to conclude the whole thesis and reveal the social meanings of this book.

摘要本文主要研究卡勒德·胡塞尼的第二本小说《灿烂千阳》。卡勒德·胡塞尼是第一位着眼于阿富汗女性的美籍阿富汗裔作家,他对当代文坛造成了十分深远的影响。

《灿烂千阳》一经出版，就被国内外学者们从各个角度争相研究。本文将从女性主义的角度对该书进行解读。本文将基于女性主义批判理论，将重重压迫下女性意识觉醒的过程作为切入点。通过对这一过程的分析，本文旨在揭示父权制的吃人本质，作者的忧虑和希望和这部作品的社会意义。

本文主要分为五章。第一章是对作者和作品的简要介绍以及本文研究目的和研究意义的陈述。第二章将以玛丽雅姆和莱拉为例，对文中阿富汗女性在父权社会和战争中遭受的压迫进行分析。第三章将分析二人从忍受到觉醒的过程。第四章是关于二人为自由和未来所做出的抗争^优尔`文~论!文'网www.youerw.com。最后一章将对全文进行总结概括，并且揭示作品的社会意义。

Chapter One Introduction

Khaled Hosseini (1965-?), an Afghan-American novelist, was born on March 4, 1965 in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father worked as a diplomat for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul while his mother worked as a Persian language teacher at a girls high school. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to Paris for his father’s job, but was not able to return to Afghanistan because of the April 1978 Saur Revolution. So later they made their residence in San Jose, California, the United States. After his graduation from college, he became a doctor in California and kept practicing medicine for over ten years, until a year and a half after the release of The Kite Runner, which brought him an extensive range of popularity and fame. However, the surprisingly perfect start didn’t give him much pressure.
