A Case Study of Lin Yutang’s English Version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji from the Perspective of Chesterman’s Models of Translation Ethics Abstract Fu Sheng Liu Ji was an autobiographical prose written by Shen Fu in the Qing Dynasty. In this book, Shen Fu described kinds of traditional Chinese culture in his daily life with his wife Yun, who was declared as one of the loveliest women in Chinese literature by Lin Yutang. Their life could be seen as a typical lifestyle of a common literate family in ancient China. This book was full of Shen’s aesthetic view, values and generous life attitude even in hardships, which was in accordance with Lin Yutang’s life philosophy. Lin successfully translated this book into Six Chapters of a Floating Life.48248
Translation is recognized as a complex cross-cultural activity, which is closely related to ethics. A professional translator can not only translate language, but shoulder ethical commitment. Among the translation theories, Chesterman’s models of ethics is a feasible theory to analyze classics and has been widely used in literary translation even achieved favorable results. But research based on this theory to study Lin’s version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji is not common. The author wants to serve a new view to Lin’s translation and contribute to the current researches of translation ethics.
Andrew Chesterman concluded the previous studies and put forward five models of translation ethics. They are: ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication, norm-based ethics, ethics of commitment. This thesis will combine those translation ethics models with Lin’s translation practice, analyze in details in order to research in Lin’s selection of translation strategies and how they are formatted. The thesis is pided into four parts, the third part is the main part, which analyze Lin’s version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji from the perspective of Chesterman’s five models of translation ethics separately, meanwhile reveal each model’s function in translation activities.

摘 要浮生六记是清朝沈复所写的一部自传体散文。在这本书中,沈复描写了与其妻子芸生活中的多种中国传统文化。他们的生活可以被看做中国古代一个普通家庭的典型生活。这本书充满了沈复独特的审美观、价值观,以及在艰难日子里的乐观生活态度。这些都与林语堂的人生哲学相符,所以林语堂成功将浮生六记翻译出来。
翻译是一种与伦理紧密联系的复杂的跨文化活动。一个专业的译者不仅能翻译语言,更能承担起译者的责任。在众多翻译理论中,切斯特曼的翻译伦理理论是切实可行的,它已经广泛应用于文学翻译,取得了可喜的成果。但从这个理论角度来分析浮生六记林语堂版本的研究并不多。笔者希望能为林语堂的翻译研究提供新视野,同时为目前的翻译伦理研究做出力所能及的贡献。
切斯特曼在总结前人的研究成果的基础上提出了翻译伦理的五大模型。他们是:再现伦理、服务伦理、传意伦理、规范伦理、专业责任伦理。此篇论文将翻译伦理模型和林语堂的翻译实践相结合,具体分析以探讨林语堂的翻译策略和布局。本文分为四部分,其中第三部分是主体,将分别从切斯特曼的五大翻译伦理模型分析林语堂版本的浮生六记,同时也探讨翻译活动中每个模型的作用。
