Vogue words are a ubiquitous phenomenon of social language, and reflect the features in politics, economics, technology, culture and social life in a specific period. Since 1980s, Chinese vogue words studies have attracted attention from Chinese linguistic circle, and become the hot topic discussed by language workers especially the lexicographers and linguists. By making a comprehensive survey of previous dissertations and books on Chinese vogue words, we can conclude that most researches done before are about the collection of vogue words, and various Chinese vogue words dictionaries on multidisciplinary and single subjects appear consequently. Besides, some papers are on the characteristics of the study on Chinese Vogue Words and their translations.
The study of Chinese vogue words translation as an academic area is relatively new in China as well as in the west. Published research works in this field from a cultural aspect is even more difficult to find. Even though there are some studies related to Chinese vogue words, they only list the C-E translations of these words,or introduce some translation methods without a systematic exploration of the features, classifications, and translation pre-misunderstandings and cultural elements. Thus, this research attempts to systematically employ the cultural translation theory in analyzing the English translation of Chinese vogue words with the purposes of illuminating the cultural reasons behind one of the most widely used translation theory-Functional Equivalence Theory, and solving the ensuing problems in the current Chinese vogue words translations. Studying and evaluating a number of typical examples of Chinese vogue words, the writer attempts to categorize them, analyze the principles, and propose some techniques for their translations. Hopefully, the techniques suggested in this thesis would serve as a reference for further research.
