Chapter II Literature Review
2。1 Research Background
2。1。1 Studies of the Translators’ Subjectivity
Translation is an activity happened among the author, translator and readers, in which the translator is an intermediary who connects the author and readers。 The subjectivity of translator refers to an initiative taken by the translator in the translation activity in order to achieve a certain purpose (Zha Mingjian, Tian Yu, 2003: 19-24)。 In a philosophical point of view, all of our human beings are born to have the subjective initiative and are able to make our own judgment in handling the objective issues。 So is the translator in the translating work。 The translator can take various strategies with his subjective initiative to achieve the certain purpose。This initiative can be identified as translators’ subjectivity。 And whether such subjectivity is played by the translator will have a direct influence on the quality of his translation。
Traditionally, the studies of translation are basically under the framework of the criteria of literary translation criticism, which is widely known as “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance”。 Among them, “faithfulness” is regarded as the highest standard for the translation activity for quite a long time。 Under the guidance of “faithfulness”, the final translation text must be “faithful” to the source language text。 And the only benchmark to evaluate a translation’s “equivalence” is that the translator must obey the rule of “faithfulness”。 In other words, he has to follow after the readers and the authors, and should not bring any personal understanding or the aesthetic views into translation。 Later, since the campaign of “cultural turn” raised from western translation community in the 1970s, when the traditional translation theory influenced by binary epistemology philosophy was broken, so had the situation that the original author and the original text should be the center or the dominated one。
While later, the concept of translators’ invisibility and subjectivity began to provide a new perspective for translation studies。 Many scholars in translation began to bear the awareness of digging up more in-depth the decisive part in translation process than the previous time, whom they firmly believed, is the translator。 So as a consequence, the subjective role of the translator started to get a wider attention。 Furthermore, in a later development, translators gradually got rid of their statuesque of being marginalized in cultural community。 And the study of the subject in translation, especially the research of translators’ subjectivity, has received its due attention and gradually gone deeper and deeper。 从目的论的视角看译者在新闻翻译中的主体性(3):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_196474.html
