1 Introduction
Social suppression and emotional tolerance are largely not familiar to the majority. Social suppression is meant to the force results from the environment or the temporal authority. The force is so powerful that the pure spirit of the two heroines has been affected unconsciously. Emotional tolerance is meant to the self-compromise when suffering from the powerful force from the environment. That is to say, people reflect changes submitted to the outer factors. It is because that it is hard for one to change the surrounding environment, but it’s easy that environment can change a person. This thesis aims to explain social suppressions in contrast with the characters in these two novels,Oliver Twist and The Scarlet Letter, which are Charles Dickens and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s representatives respectively.
Oliver Twist is mainly about an orphan who has suffered from the tough life in his childhood. When he escapes to London, he is unconscious of being brought to a den of thieves. He meets Nancy there. Eventually, with the help of Mr. Brownlow and Miss Rose, his fate has changed and started his new life. In the novel, however, Nancy is a character with humanity. Her existence finally establishes the success of justice. She tells the truth of Oliver’s identity and Monks’s plan to Miss Rose. When Nancy gets the opportunity to follow Brownlow and Rose to have a new life, she doesn’t hesitate to turn back to Sikes. But her destiny is a tragedy; she is killed by Monks at last.
In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is a beautiful and young lady but there is a rumor that her husband is dead when he is on the way to America from England. Just at this moment, a handsome priest Dimmesdale appears in her life. They fall in love and give the birth to the baby Pearl. Eventually their affairs expose under the sun, so Hester is punished to wear letter A (abbreviation of adultery) in the rest of her life. Later, Dimmesdale can’t continue to endure the sufferings so he tells the truth to the public and finally ends his life in relief and Hester comes back and lives in seclusion with letter A.
Although two novelists come from different countries, their novels cover the same social problems. The inner and outer factors explain the emotional changes of the two heroines. They also reveal that the temporal social phenomenon, including politics situation, economy situation and culture situation, contribute to emotional tolerance of the heroines.
This thesis aims to explain social suppressions in contrast with the characters in these two novels. There are three main parts in this essay which covers the introduction of authors and novels, heroines’ emotional tolerance and the analysis of the emotional tolerance. First of all, a brief introduction will be provided about the authors and their novels. It can help to understand the content of the stories easily and to know the character of these two heroines. Next, it is the statement of heroines’ emotional tolerance respectively. Then it is the analysis of the emotional tolerance. The reason of being lost in the spiritual suffering lies in both outer reason and inner fators simultaneously. Both of them are two kinds of evenly matched power to rival each other. Through the comparison, readers can find that heroines suffer the double-influence and that’s why they are different women. At last, the thesis analyses the different social suppression between Britain and America, the social class in Britain and religion in America. It reveals the temporal cruel social phenomenon. 《红字》中海斯特和《雾都孤儿》中南希的情感容忍的比较(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_22430.html
