A Comparative Study of Translations of Culture-loaded Words in Bian Cheng based on Relevance Theory
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Significance
Today the world has been a whole. Communicative activities are not only popular in the field of economy and politics, but also in the culture. Due to its fast development, the inference of China is increasing in the world. More and more foreign people show great interest in Chinese culture. They want to read more books translated from China. Translation workers play a very important role as the cultural carrier to introduce Chinese culture to the outside world, which causes translation field becoming more and more important.
Bian Cheng, a great book of the famous writer Shen Congwen, is not only popular in china, but also has a world reputation. It has won the nomination of Noble literature prize twice. Many foreigners want to read the charming book, but those culture-loaded words in the book usually puzzle them. Culture-loaded words refer to those words with culture implications in Chinese language. They belong to a special cultural phenomenon, on one hand they developed with the evolution of one ethnic or a country, and directly reflect the unique culture. On the other hand, they usually puzzle foreigners due to their uniqueness and complexity. To some degree, the successful translation decides whether target readers can successfully appreciate the book Bian Cheng, even affect the success in the culture communication and the promoting of Chinese culture. Since it has been introduced to the field of translation, relevance theory lights on a new way for translation study. And the theory is proved to be effective in guiding translation activities. As a result, there is a great significance to carry on the research of the translation of culture-loaded words in Bian Cheng in relevance theory.
1.2 The Purpose of the Research
The thesis is aimed at seeking for translation skills of Chinese culture-loaded words from the perspective of relevance theory. By comparing two versions of Bian Cheng under the guidance of relevance theory, making clear their advantages and limitations, in this way we can properly translate culture-loaded words in Bian Cheng. Sperber and Wilson put forward the great relevance theory, then Gutt introduced it to the field of translation. It is“a unified theoretical framework, as foundation for the methodological and ontological studies and consideration of translation”. (Zhao Yanchun, 1999, P. 273) Although relevance theory was not initially put forwarded for translation studies, it studied human communication and cognitive environment. And it has formed into a system format including principles, criterion and so on. We all know translation is a special kind of communication. So we can apply the relevance in the translation field. This thesis is designed to find effective culture-loaded words translation strategies under the guidance of relevance theory. 基于关联理论的《边城》文化负载词翻译对比研究(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_22652.html
