Abstract Edgar Allan Poe’s advanced creativity has a great impact on the western literature and even the world literature as well. From atmosphere rendering, character development to the whole plot, the beautiful Gothic horror is witnessed in all aspects. Gothic images are mainly Gothic architectural images it is the reason why Poe, with his writing skills and psycho-drawing, keeps his flag flying for decades. Resorting the Gothic setting, he presents the mental terrors which gives the reader an extraordinarily pleasant experience. This paper explains what the Gothic is and presents a brief review of the Gothic. It goes on to provide the core creative concept—“effect aesthetics”. After this, the paper, from the perspective of the architectural images, analyses the unique usage in “preset effects”, “symbolisms” and “psychological exploration” and highlights the importance of architectural images. Poe’s writing techniques, including scene description, character development, structure of the plot and the supernatural description, are still applied by modern writers. Combining amazingly together the Gothic elements and psycho-drawing via a fabulous portraying of architectural images, Poe brings the Gothic novel to an absolutely new level.

摘要爱伦•坡在哥特小说方面的超前创作实践曾对欧美乃至世界文坛产生过重要影响，他的作品，从气氛渲染、人物刻画到故事情节等各方面无不渗透着哥特式的恐怖美。哥特意象，很大程度上就是哥特建筑的意象，坡的作品之所以长盛不衰，表面上得益于他的哥特式写作技巧及人物心理刻画，实际上是他把这种来自内心的恐怖通过哥特式场景来表现的，继而给读者一种精神愉悦和美的感受。本论文首先回答了什么是哥特式传统，并对其做了简单回顾；其次介绍了爱伦•坡的核心创作理念——“效果美学”说；然后从着重建筑意象的角度，分析了这些哥特建筑意象在“预设效果”、“象征主义”及“心理探索”等方面的独特作用，从而肯定了坡在小说创作中的卓越贡献。坡的诸多创作手法如场景描写、哥特式人物的塑造、情节的构造和超自然的描写仍然被现代作家所应用。坡通过建筑意象的描写把哥特式元素与人物的心理刻画巧妙地结合在一起，将哥特式小说推向了一个新的高度。关键词：埃德加•爱伦•坡，哥特，文学，建筑意象5344
