Abstract: The Catcher in the Rye, published in 1951, is the only published novel of J.D. Salinger. The novel has exerted great influence on the American society and literary world and sometimes it is called “Modern Classic” of American literature in the 20th century. The protagonist is an adolescent named Holden Caulfield and in the novel, he is the only narrator telling his experience in New York City around last Christmas. While Holden is both the character and the narrator in the novel, his first person narrative is bound to be subjective. The thesis aims to study the unreliable narration on the basis of Wayne C. Booth and James Phelan’s theory of unreliable narration, analyzing the text clues of unreliable narration and its effects. The first part is the introduction to the writer J.D. Salinger and the plots of The Catcher in the Rye. The second part is the literature review on the novel and theories of unreliable narration. The third part analyzes the clues in the text which indicates that Holden is a unreliable narrator and various types of his unreliable narrative according to James Phelan’s classification on three axes. The fourth part discusses the effects of unreliable narration on the theme of the novel.29526
