I. Introduction
Sylvia Plath , a confessional novelist and poet of America, was born on 27th October, 1932 in Jamaica Plain, a part of Boston, Massachusetts and committed suicide on 11th February, 1963. His father, Otto Plath, was a German immigrant who was a biology professor specializing in bees at Boston University. Her mother, Aurelia Plath who was a student of his father at Boston University and twenty years younger than him, was an English teacher in a high school. After marrying to Otto Plath, she became a homemaker. Plath’s brother, Warren Plath, was born in the spring of 1935, when Otto Plath began to feel unhealthy. Finally, Otto Plath died of a pulmonary embolism after a leg amputation on 4 th November, 1940 when Sylvia Plath was only eight years old which was a wound to the family and especially to Sylvia Plath. “When Sylvia was told about her father’s death she declared that she was never going to speak to God again” (Connell 24). Going through the loss of Otto Plath, her mother placed strong expectation to Sylvia Plath. In this circumstance, Plath studied hard but also became lonely and silent.
As a genius in writing and art kept journals at 11 , Sylvia Plath published poems in the local magazines and newspapers. She was an excellent student at school. In junior high school, she wrote for The Phillipian, the school’s literary magazine. As a full scholarship student, she entered the Smith College in 1950. During the study there, she was given an opportunity to New York as a guest editor for Mademoiselle Magazine. Nevertheless, the opportunity became a disaster to Plath. Her confidence was destroyed and she tried to commit suicide by taking hypnotics, because she found she could not blend in writing course at Harvard. After the therapy, she returned to Smith University and graduated from there with full scholarship to study in Cambridge University where she received her master degree.
